How to get your local business recommended by ChatGPT and AI search
More customers now ask an AI assistant "who is a good plumber in Port St. Lucie" instead of scrolling Google. Here is how those assistants pick businesses, and how to be one of them.

Short answer
AI assistants recommend businesses they can find, understand and trust. Keep your Google profile and listings complete and consistent, collect steady reviews, make your website answer common questions in plain language, add schema markup and an llms.txt file, and get mentioned on local sites like the chamber of commerce.
Where AI assistants get their answers
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews pull from the web: business listings, review sites, local directories, news and your own website. When someone asks for a local recommendation, they look for businesses that show up clearly and consistently across those sources, with good reviews.
1. Be consistent everywhere
Use the same business name, phone, website and town on Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook and every directory. AI assistants compare sources. If they disagree, you are less likely to be recommended.
2. Keep reviews coming
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for both Google and AI answers. Recent reviews that mention what you did and where help most, like "fixed our AC in Palm City the same day".
3. Answer questions on your website
Write pages that answer what customers actually ask, in plain language: what you do, where, how much it costs, how long it takes, what makes you different. Put the answer in the first sentence or two. Assistants quote pages that answer clearly.
4. Add a page for each service and town
If you want to be recommended in Port St. Lucie or Vero Beach, say so on a page about your work there. A single page that lists every town is weaker than a real page for each.
5. Add structured data and llms.txt
Schema markup tells search engines and AI tools your business type, location, services, hours and FAQs in a format they read directly. An llms.txt file gives AI tools a simple map of your most important pages.
6. Get mentioned on trusted local sites
Chamber of commerce listings, local news, community sites and industry directories all count. Each mention is another source that says you are real, local and good at what you do.
7. Check what the assistants say about you
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity questions like "best [your service] in [your town]". Note who they recommend and why. That tells you what to fix.
Do this before anything else
If your Google Business Profile is incomplete or your listings do not match, fix that first. It helps your Google Maps ranking and your AI recommendations at the same time. See how to show up on Google Maps, or let us handle it with AI search visibility.
